


Positional power is one of three types: legitimate, reward, coercive. (2016), such power comes from two main realms: positional and personal. In order to create organizational motivation, power needs to come from some source.

Power is, citing Kanter (1984), the magnitude of a leader’s ability to marshall resources (people, processes, etc.) to achieve results for an organization or entity (Katz, 1998). In January 2022, Citigroup reported 2021 revenue of nearly $72 billion (Citigroup, 2022b). Moving through the leadership ranks of Citigroup, she became overall CEO in March 2021. She began her career in global finance as an analyst with Goldman Sachs in 1988 and became a partner at the consulting firm McKinsey and Company in 1994 (LinkedIn, n.d.). Amazon has faced criticism over the years for its management culture and its obsession with worker productivity (Kantor & Streitfeld, 2015). It is the largest online retailer in the world, according to Ovide (2021). Today, Amazon has a net revenue of $368 billion (Coppola, 2021). According to Hartmans (2022), Bezos held his initial company meetings in a neighborhood Barnes and Noble bookstore. Different industries use vastly different leadership styles and influence techniques. While both Bezos and Fraser are significant in their respective industries, they have different styles of leadership that make a discussion of their unique approaches worthy of examination. The paper will detail different aspects of their leadership styles: accumulation of power, influence styles (and associated drawback), reward structures for their employees, and posit an overall theory of leadership based on defined styles in research. This paper will focus on two leaders in different industries: Jeff Bezos in electronic commerce and Jane Fraser in finance. (2019) state, organizations need leadership in order to succeed.
